High-performance tools with optimized cooling structure for injection molding applications

The cooperation project "High performance tools with optimized cooling for injection molding applications (HLW-S)" has been initiated by the ZIM network "NOWHUM S" and will be realized together in cooperation with project partners from industry and research.

The aim of this development project is to exploit the potential and performance of selective laser melting better and more systematically than before. In the concrete application case, the high design freedom of additive manufacturing is to be used to realize tool inserts with optimized internal cooling structures, which is currently not possible with the physical and economic limits of classical manufacturing methods.

In this project, the Chair of Additive Manufacturing is focusing on the sub-task "Process-side optimization of SLM for complex internal structures and specific material properties". The main focus is on filigree structures, defined material microstructures and surface properties. After that, the first tool inserts with such properties will be manufactured as a prototype.
