On 5th October 2021, the NK2 Network for a Circular Carbon Economy organized a chemical recycling workshop which focused on waste pyrolysis. It was our pleasure to organize the workshop as a hybrid event, and that about half of the 36 participants were able to take part in the event physically in Freiberg.

On 16th June 2021, the German National Network for a Circular Carbon Economy (NK2) organized yet another successful online workshop. During the event, 87 international participants came together for exchanges about the latest global developments in the production and utilization of green ammonia as an energy carrier and for hydrogen storage.

Plasma Technology Workshop

Opportunities for Green Chemistry

Plasma Technologies could offer promising opportunities for green chemistry to support the transition towards a sustainable hydrogen and circular carbon economy. Following the invitation by the Network for a Circular Carbon Economy NK2, 118 international participants came together in an online workshop to learn about the latest developments in the field of thermal and alternative plasma technologies, and its potential contribution to climate protection and a sustainable chemical industry.

Chemical storage of regenerative hydrogen in CO2-neutral fuels - potentials, raw materials, perspectives

The chemical storage of regenerative hydrogen in CO2-neutral fuels - a current and versatile topic, which was the subject of the event on 08.10.20 hosted by Recenso. The NK2 participants discussed among other things the political classification, possible applications, process routes but also efficiency and market potential. The day ended with an exciting tour to the Ecowest waste management center in Ennigerloh.

Chemical recycling workshop in Freiberg

Chemical recycling can be a key for CO2 reduction. Following the invitation of the Network for a Circular Carbon Economy NK2, more than 30 experts from science and industry came together in Freiberg for discussions about existing and future technological options, potential feedstock for chemical recycling and alternative technological routes as well as the contribution of chemical recycling to climate protection and a sustainable chemical industry.

Chemical recycling, CO2 emissions from various chemical recycling routes, production of alternative fuels - these were the topics at the kick-off meeting of the National Network for a Circular Carbon Economy NK2. The network was initiated in January 2019 by the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS and the Institute for Energy Process Engineering and Chemical Engineering IEC at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Its members want to discuss the topic of circular carbon economy cross-sectoral and promote it through cooperation.

Chemical Recycling - Trends, options and perspektives

With an revenues of around 195 billion euros per year, the chemical industry represents the third largest economic sector in Germany. It is characterized both by multi-stage and branched value-added chains and by the high demand for carbonaceous raw materials (about 17 million tons of carbon/year). This demand is mainly covered by imported crude oil and natural gas and - unlike in the energy or mobility sector, for example - cannot be replaced easily by carbon-free substances or technologies. A more sustainable raw material base is needed and can be implemented with the help of chemical recycling and recirculation of secondary raw materials, i.e. the transition towards a circular carbon economy.

Kick-Off in Espenhain

Carbonaceous raw materials are fundamentally important resources for German industry and thus for our prosperity. A circular carbon economy should use those raw materials in a sustainable way by closely linking the sectors energy industry, chemical industry, plant construction and waste management. On the initiative of the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS, companies and research institutes in Espenhain today gave the first impetus for the establishment of a national network for a circular carbon economy.
