Applied Sciences: Mathematics and Computer Science

Our faculty is engaged in the foundations of a university of technology: together with domain experts we design models of scientific and technical processes, develop computational tools for fast and precise simulations and provide multi-media visualizations, for example in our state-of-the-art CAVE. We further research robots that support humans in challenging environments.

Research

Our scientists conduct their research in an interdisciplinary environment together with colleagues from other faculties in the wider fields of resource technology, i.e. exploring, using, conserving, managing and recycling our planet's resources. Our mathematicians and computer scientists cooperate with engineers, chemists, and physicists as well as geo- and material scientists. Hot topics currently under investigation include:

  • numerical simulation,
  • algorithms for high performance computing,
  • multimedia and virtual reality,
  • partial and stochastic differential equations,
  • optimal control,
  • algorithms,
  • virtual reality.

Our research is supported by DFG grants (German Research Foundation) for individual projects, collaborative research centers and priority programs. Close cooperations with the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and the Helmholtz-Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) constantly challenge our creativity.
