The start-up network SAXEED is moving into a new coworking space at DBI with immediate effect and will support start-up teams at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg from October with a newly developed excellence program.

After almost nine years of temporary accommodation at the "Reiche Zeche", the founder network SAXEED moved to new premises in the DBI industrial complex at Halsbrücker Straße 34 at the beginning of June. "It was very important to us to link the TU Bergakademie Freiberg start-up projects more closely with us in terms of space and to provide them with even more targeted advice with the help of a new early-stage incubator," explains Andre Uhlmann, SAXEED site manager at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The idea of setting up our own coworking space for the TU Bergakademie Freiberg start-up projects was quickly born.

In addition to the offices of the three SAXEED start-up consultants, there is a large joint office for the EXIST start-up scholarships and the EXIST research transfers of the TU Freiberg. In peak phases up to six founder teams will work in the coworking space. The workstations will be supplemented by a consulting room and a modern workshop room. "This makes it possible that the workshops organized by SAXEED for people interested in founding a company can also take place directly in the innovative environment of the start-ups at our mining academy. In this way we want to make entrepreneurship an important career path for our students and scientific staff," explains Professor Dr. Rudolf Kawalla, Vice Rector for Research at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and SAXEED project manager.

SAXEED Masterclass combines consulting with coworking space

In October, the newly developed 18-month early phase incubator for the founding projects of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg - the SAXEED Masterclass - will be launched in the coworking space. It combines a structured coaching schedule, intensive consulting and knowledge transfer with shared office workplaces in a new Coworking Space. The SAXEED Masterclass, in which all EXIST-funded start-up projects of TU Bergakademie Freiberg participate, has the primary goal of increasing the quality of start-ups. To this end, in addition to the SAXEED start-up advisors, regional partners, above all investors, associations and strategic partners or pilot customers from the region are involved in the development process of the start-ups as part of an expert jury at an early stage and the foundation stone for long-term partnerships is laid. The focus of the SAXEED Masterclass is on the validation of the business model, product and team development and the acquisition of follow-up financing. A new SAXEED Masterclass starts every six months - the first class will complete the EXIST start-up scholarship "Just-in-Time-Food" (professorship for international management and corporate strategy) and the EXIST research transfer projects, "NaPaGen" (Institute for Electronic and Sensor Materials) and "Rockfeel" (Professor for Open-Cast Mining) from October 1, 2020.

The new coworking space and the SAXEED Masterclass are being financed with the help of the EXIST-Potential grant acquired by SAXEED last December from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi). The goal of the award-winning project is to increase the number and quality of technology-oriented start-ups by establishing a sustainable, regionally anchored start-up culture. This is achieved by closely linking the start-up network with regional partners in business, financing and other regional and supra-regional players in start-up support. "The partners involved, including the City of Freiberg, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, futureSAX and various investors such as the Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen or the Mittelständische Beteiligungsgesellschaft Sachsen, are to network with the start-up teams at an early stage and provide a needs-based offer at every stage of the start-up process," explains Andre Uhlmann. A total of around 25 regional and national partners have expressed their support for the SAXEED Masterclass.

Context: The start-up network SAXEED at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg

As a central institution at the Vice Rectorate of Research, the start-up network SAXEED is a key player in the start-up support at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. SAXEED sensitizes and motivates students, graduates and university staff to the idea of founding their own company. Through the wide range of network and teaching events, founders are qualified and accompanied by experienced start-up advisors from the evaluation of the business idea through the development of the business model to the establishment of their own start-up.
