First-semester students appreciate personal support and the campus character

As the results of a survey of first-year students show, personal support for students in small study groups at the campus university as well as the technical and scientific subjects offered are decisive factors in choosing Freiberg as a study location.

The low cost of living, degree programs with no admission restrictionsand the university's good reputation are further reasons why the first-semester students decided to study at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. For the international students, who made up around 15 percent of the first-semester students in the period of the survey, the strength in research and international cooperation were the main reasons for studying in Mittelsachsen (Central Saxony). For those surveyed, the content of the course and the professional activities associated with it has the greatest influence on the choice of course. 26 percent of the respondents chose TU Freiberg because of a special course, such as courses leading to a diploma or unique subjects such as mine surveying and applied geodesy. Before enrolling, more than half of the respondents obtained detailed information about the range of courses and their location, and got to know the university online.

Background: First-semester monitoring in the wintersemester 2020/21

The first-semester survey was carried out in the period from 1 August to 31 October 2020 among the students in the first semester, with a little more than half of the participants filling out the standardized questionnaire (458 participants). The survey was created and carried out by the Professorship for Marketing and International Trade in cooperation with University Communications and the International Center. With the annual first-semester monitoring, the university systematically gains information on students‘ decisions for or against the university location and course of study and records the students‘ perception of its reputation.
