Mechanical recycling of Lithium-ion batteries – a technological overview

At the Institute for Mechanical Process Engineering and Mineral Processing (MVTAT), research has been conducted for 10 years on the recycling of lithium-ion batteries through mechanical processes. The aim of the corresponding research and transfer projects (e.g. ABattReLife, AutoBatRec, InnoRec, DIGISORT, LOWVOLMON) is to develop technological solutions and, based on these, to improve the energy and recycling efficiency within the mechanical recycling chain. The constituents of the batteries and their behaviour are analysed in a wide range of process variants and the knowledge and technological potential thus gained is transferred to industry. Thus, we have a profound insight and a great overview into the state of the art in this subject area.
In the short lecture series "Mechanical recycling of lithium-ion batteries - a technological overview", we will first introduce the motivation for the recycling of lithium-ion batteries (Circular economy and motivation for lithium-ion battery recycling). Thereby, future prognoses are derived from a political, ecological and economic point of view on the European Circular Economy Strategy. The following presentation “Dismantling of lithium-ion battery systems” presents the goals and technological challenges of disassembling battery systems to defined sizes and dimensions in more detail. Within the presentation “Crushing of lithium-ion battery modules and cells” a concrete insight into the research regarding the liberation and crushing behaviour of the batteries is given, which is concluded by the presentation “Sorting of lithium-ion battery fragments” regarding the enrichment of the individual components and ingredients for conditioning for the subsequent metallurgical processes.
