72. BHT: Fachkolloquium 6

Red Mud - Fundamental progress of the industry in both economics as well as ecological aspects by the introduction of a new mass raw material for energy storage, water purification,
construction materials and steel production

Termin: 9. Juni 2021, 9.00 - 15.30 Uhr
Ort: virtuell
Ansprechpartner: Dr. Horst Schmidt
Konferenzsprache: Deutsch / Englisch

In the alumina industry about half of the raw material (Bauxite) employed has to be deposited at the end of the process as Bauxite Residue (Red Mud) with high costs creating deposit sites that will need continuous monitoring. Annually 200 million tons of Bauxite Residue are produced and there are billions of tons available. The products of the aluminum industry, aluminum hydroxide, alumina and finally aluminum metal are subject to the pricing regime of the London Metal Exchange (LME). By marketing modified Bauxite Residue in the fields of construction chemistry, water purification and energy storage, the dependency upon LME price finding is gone. With the new price-finding process the aluminum industry can outreach to new fields of applications. In the last stage, all existing deposit sites of Bauxite Residue will be reopened for the raw material stored: waste will become raw material for usage in the most urgently pressing problem sectors in the world. This way the international activities like climate change control and renewable energy regime can be put on the fast lane by employing a new process technology. This paradigm change within the aluminum industry is a foremost example for a cradle-to-cradle concept implementation on a grand scale.
