Accommodation
There are several types of accommodation in Freiberg:
• in a dormitory (residence) of the University provided by the Student Services Office
(Studentenwerk)
• in a private room or apartment
• in a flat-sharing community (Wohngemeinschaft) together with other students
Dormitory
In order to get an accommodation in a student dormitory, please apply early.
Fulltime students applying via ASSIST can apply for a room in a dormitory directly at the Student Services Office (Studentenwerk) after they have received the admission for
study.
Due to the large numbers of students applying for a dormitory room, not every student can be offered a room. Therefore, the Student Services Office (Studentenwerk) offers sometimes provisional accommodation for the first days of your stay.
Located
close to the campus,
these dormitories are within easy
walking
distance to
the faculties, library,
lecture halls, and canteen as
well as
the city
centre. The monthly cost is 150–250 € per person and generally includes services costs.
For more information please visit the web site of the Student Services Office (Studentenwerk):

Private flats and sharing a flat
Accommodation can also be found in one of the numerous rooms and apartments offered by private landlords. In Freiberg, many students choose to live in their own apartment or to share an apartment or house, living together in a so-called WG (Wohngemeinschaft). When rent, utilities and other expenses are added up, the total cost is not much different from that of a dormitory
room and in some cases even cheaper. Apartments are generally unfurnished, although built-in kitchens are usually provided.

• Städtische Wohnungsgesellschaft (SWG), Freiberg, Beuststraße 1
• RWR Immobilien, Obermarkt 1, www.rwr.de
Please note that most prices given by private landlords are quoted without such services as heating, water, and electricity. This rental pricing without services is called Kaltmiete. The additional
expense for services is usually about 1.50–2.00 € per square metre. You may buy very reasonably priced furniture at the very beginning of the semester from other students (watch the
bulletin boards!),
from shops
with used
furniture (e.g.
in the
Burg- or Fischerstraße) or contact the Student Services Office (Studentenwerk or Studentenrat.)
Health Insurance
Please make sure that you have adequate health insurance coverage for the duration of your stay
in Germany before going abroad or be prepared to purchase insurance in Germany. You can arrange health insurance policy to cover you during your stay in Germany with a company in your home country. Please bring some form of proof of insurance with you. If you are from a European Union or EFTA country, you should bring your EU-Insurance card. For students from other countries, a letter from your insurance company should be enough.
You can also purchase health insurance in Germany, either from the government-sponsored insurers at
about 56.00€/month or from
private insurance
companies costing about
29.00 €/month or more. Proof of insurance must be shown at matriculation. Note that if you are over 30 when you enter Germany, you are strongly advised to insure yourself with a private health insurance company.
Accident Insurance
As a student, you are insured for any accident which occurs in connection with your studies and when you are on the way to or from the University campus. This coverage is provided by the Municipal Accident Insurance Federation of Saxony. Additional insurance coverage is available privately.
Cost of living
Living in Freiberg is relatively inexpensive compared to the western part of Germany with an estimated sum of 500 € per month. You will find that this will allow you only a modest lifestyle. Both at the University and in your private sphere, you should consider that there will be some basic fixed expenses.
