Faculty of Geosciences, Geoengineering and Mining
Faculty of Geosciences, Geoengineering and Mining (Faculty 3)
![]() |
The Geosciences in Freiberg deal with the entire System Earth. With their knowledge in physics, chemistry, biology and the engineering expertise, they assist to better understand our planet and to use it in a sustainable manner. As of the first term already, you will be trained to understand the dimensions of time and space – and important prerequisite for systemic thinking. A second early component in education and research relates to the different parts of the geosphere and its interactions.
Geoscience experience is in demand to find solutions for pressing current issues of the modern industrial society – be it in sustainable resource assessment and exploitation, the protection of water bodies or the recultivation of landscapes and the big questions on global change. The term sustainability was coined in Freiberg.
TU Bergakademie Freiberg offers as the only university courses in the entire suite of geoscience– from Geology / Mineralogy via Geoecology to Geotechnics and Mining. Geo-Engineers and Geoscientists with their related know-how and an excellent infrastructure – this does not exist elsewhere. Top ranking results (e.g., CHE-Ranking) in the Geosciences confirm the excellent study conditions, education and coaching.
In Freiberg, you benefit from internationally reknowned Geo-research and a unique agglomeration of Geo-companies and institutions in the immediate vicinity – your opportunity for related internships, an early entry into research projects and your contribution to the international Geo-community.

News of faculty 3

New associate professors of our facultyThe Faculty warmly welcomes Dr. Olaf Elicki (picture left) and Dr. Thomas Seifert (picture right) amongst the professors. Both are long time faculty members and received the upgrades due to their far above average commitment and engagement for the Faculty and for their scientific achievements. Olaf is paleontologist and specialist in micropaleontology, and paleozoic and proterozoic biotopes. Thomas made his name as an economic geologist, specialized on the Erzgebirge deposits and on lamprophyres around the world. We are happy about the acknowledgment and the strenthening of our team. |
