Christmas in a host family
Since 2002, students from abroad may visit German families in Freiberg for Christmas in order to experience German culture at one of it‘s best. A program of the „Arbeitskreis Ausländische Studierende at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg“ (AKAS) connects the students with German host families in Freiberg and the surrounding area. This year, AKAS expects 27 foreign students from eleven countries to be welcomed in 18 German families.
The AKAS organizes events for international students throughout the lecture period of the winter and the summer semester. In the time before Christmas an International Christmas Party and a city excursion should not be missed. This year, about 50 students visited the town of Seiffen and its Toy Museum.
"Our program, ‚Christmas with a family‘, however, is special, because here we‘re leaving the campus and we involve the locals", says Manuela Junghans, the organizer of the program. "Many families have participated for several years now and mention interesting discussions and insights into their guests‘ cultures.“ The students, however, get in contact with German families for the first time and report on unforgettable hours: They experience German children when playing or making music, grandparents when telling stories and families during Christmas dinner, when the traditional German Christmas goose is being served. Some hosts take their guests to lesser known places in Freiberg. If time allows, some students return the favor with the preparation of a traditional food from their homeland.
